An essential resource for students and specialists of mediaeval Islamic and Jewish history, religious studies and for anyone interested in the history of the Holy Land. Even if some Crusaders could, and did, march overland as far as Constantinople and thence over to Asia Minor, they could not be supplied in their destination of the Holy Land without seaborne support. [1] I want to reflect briefly on this controversy and its origins, and then ask why theological disputes of various sorts are popping up so frequently in American political discourse and what can be done about that. It is a 1992 translation and revised version of volume I of Palestine During the First Muslim Period which was published in Hebrew in 1983 and presents an authoritative survey of the early mediaeval Islamic and Jewish worlds. The main part of the church, still in use, was built in the twelfth century by Christian invaders of the Holy Land. I should also mention that I really am enjoying The Crusades : The Authoritative History of the War for the Holy Land by Thomas Asbridge. It is titled The Crusades: The Authoritative History of the War for the Holy Land by Thomas Asbridge. 634 to that of the Crusaders in 1099. Our job is to prevent the culture war from becoming Holy War. Karen Armstrong is the author of Islam: A Short History. Two millennia before the Crusades, people were worshiping at this same spot. It was when the Christians of Europe were fighting brutal holy wars against Muslims in the Middle East that Islam first became known in the west as the religion of the sword. One of these boys mobilized followers to march to Jerusalem to convert Muslims in the Holy Land to Christianity and recover the True Cross. Given the timeliness and urgency of the present-day war on terror, the popular search for causes of which has unearthed issues going back as far as the Crusades if not beyond, intelligent consideration of this topic is particularly pertinent today. If anything, this very concept finds its roots in human history, as The Crusades: The Authoritative History of the War for the Holy Land (which I am currently reading) has reminded me. Some of the first Crusaders began their journey to the Holy Land by massacring the Jewish communities along the Rhine valley; the Crusaders ended their campaign in 1099 by slaughtering some 30,000 Muslims and Jews in Jerusalem. He is a British historian whose book has led to a documentary on the BBC about the Crusades. Crusade's intention was “holy” war (originally intended to get Jerusalem, which is not theirs, that caused the lives of thousands of Jews and Muslims) while Jihad is struggle of a Muslim to his faith.
